Garret McCaslin was born in Pomona, CA in the spring of 1969. He grew up in OR where he played multiple sports in school and started riding steers at the county fair.
Garret enlisted in the Air Force in 1987 and became a crew chief for the F-111 fighter-bomber aircraft. He was stationed at Mountain Home AFB, ID, RAF Upper Heyford, England and Cannon AFB, NM with multiple deployments to the Middle East and other countries. While stationed in NM, his brother introduced him to military rodeo in 1995 and it inspired him to establish a rodeo team at Cannon AFB.
While competing in BB, SB, and CD, Garret would also serve as team captain for the Burning Sands rodeo team as they traveled the southwest for military rodeos. He led the effort to produce the first military rodeo in Clovis, NM in 1996. Garret won the Camp Pendleton rodeo BB and AA titles in 1996 while Burning Sands won the team title. He would go on to qualify for the Military Rodeo Cowboys Association (MRCA) World Finals Rodeo in all three of his events in 1996 and 1997. He also competed in the IPRA, PRCA and New Mexico Rodeo Association for several years.
After separating from the USAF in 1997, Garret would begin a career as a farrier, but his passion was producing rodeos. He raised bucking horses and produced multiple rodeos in Pahrump, NV for the MRCA and other organizations over a twelve-year period. After moving to OR in 2010 he would continue producing rodeos including several MRCA sanctioned events.
Another move in 2024 to Yosemite, KY has opened doors for more military rodeos to be produced in the southeast as Garret continues to look for opportunities to give back to the sport of military rodeo. Though he has put the rough stock gear bag away, he is still an active contestant in the CD event at military rodeos.
